The Senate Aires Premier Men’ Barbershop
Chorus
The Senate Aires Chorus is an all-male barbershop
chorus consisting of approximately 65 men. It
was chartered in 1954 as the Salem Chapter of
the Barbershop Harmony Society.
As such, it is part of the one of the largest
non-profit groups in America with over 31,000
members. It is the only men’s chorus of
this type in the Salem area.
The chorus is devoted to singing America’s
unique barbershop style of music that originated
in the late 1800’s when for entertainment,
men congregated in barbershops or on street
corners to sing in close harmony. It’s
repertoire includes the classic songs of the
early 1900’s as well as many modern compositions.
From patriotic numbers to religious songs, to
love songs, to up tunes to ballads, it’s
repertoire is sure to include something to please
any ear.
The chorus performs for many civic and charitable
functions throughout the Salem area. It’s
principle financial support is through annual
dues, annual shows, Singing Valentines and paid
performances for conventions, etc.
The chorus also prides itself in it’s
achievements this past eight years in winning
the Evergreen District Chorus championship. In it’s history, the chorus has
won ten District championships and competed
on the International stage ten times.
Chorus membership consists of men, not just
from the Salem area, but from outside Salem
such as Eugene, Portland, Bend and Lincoln City.
It’s diversity is one of it’s strong
points with the ages of its members ranging
from about 10 years to the 80s, with vocations
ranging from students to accountants, to mechanics,
executives and retirees.
We rehearse every Thursday evening at 7:30
p.m. at the Knight’s of Columbus Hall
at Shipping & Cottage at Fairground Rd.
